Diploma in Psychosexual Psychotherapy

Welcome to the Institute of Psychosexual Psychotherapy, where we offer a comprehensive and accredited Diploma in Psychosexual Psychotherapy.

This program is designed for qualified talk therapists seeking to specialise in psychosexual and relationship psychotherapy, equipping you with the advanced knowledge and practical skills necessary to excel in this vital field of psychotherapy. Our diploma provides a robust foundation for a rewarding career, allowing you to address complex issues related to psychosexual health, function, pleasure and relationships with confidence and expertise.

Accreditation

Our program is fully accredited with COSRT at Level 7, ensuring the highest provision of training in Psychosexual and Relationship Psychotherapy available in the UK. Upon completion, graduates gain entry to both the Psychosexual and Relationship Therapy (PRT) and Relationship Therapy (RT) COSRT register. This confers the right to practice as both a Psychosexual Therapist and Relationship Therapist, enhancing professional credibility and career prospects.

Comprehensive Training

Delivered part-time over two years through 20 weekend modules (Sundays and Mondays, 10am-5pm), our diploma provides a robust and balanced approach to theoretical knowledge, practical skills, and personal development. Psychosexual medicine and dysfunction modules are delivered by medical doctors and highly experience clinicians. Our relationship therapy modules are integrative, including CBT, Humanistic, Psychodynamic and Systemic approaches.

Teaching Approach

Each weekend is carefully structured to maximise your learning experience. Teaching weekends focus on theoretical frameworks and evidence-based practices, through engaging lectures and discussions. Combined with hands-on skills practice, including role plays, case studies, and group work. This approach ensures that students can apply theoretical concepts to real-world scenarios.

We have a range of highly qualified guest lecturers who bring expertise from across the field of psychosexual therapy, relationship therapy, sexual medicine and psychology. They bring highly specialist subject matter knowledge and experience, including domestic violence, gender, sex and relationship diversity, sexual offending, sexual compulsivity, trauma informed practice, neurodivergence, intersectionality and equality diversity and inclusivity.

Advanced Training

Diploma graduates can progress onto our Psychotherapy Practitioner Diploma, successful completion of this diploma, along with additional post qualifying clinical practice and COSRT accreditation, leads to full clinical membership with the UKCP.

Attendance

Our course offers two modes of attendance, online or in person. Our online programme is open to international students who do not have access to psychosexual training in their country of original as well as UK students who are unable to travel or require online attendance:

Personal and Professional Development (PPD)

Students are required to undertake 50 hours of personal and professional development activity during the two years of the diploma, at least 20 hours of which must be personal therapy with a suitably qualified practitioner.

COSRT allows students to count reflective process groups, provided as part of the live teaching modules, towards the 50 hours of PPD activity.

Each module of the diploma includes a one hour reflective process group, meaning 20 hours of PPD is included as part of the programme. This commitment to PPD is designed to enhance student reflexivity and clinical practice.

Throughout the training, there is an emphasis on reflexive practice, encouraging students to develop self-awareness, identify any blind spots and deepen their understanding of the complex themes within Psychosexual and Relationship Psychotherapy.

Flexible Placement Options

Students will complete a 150 hour clinical training placement as part of their diploma and can complete up to 70% of their clinical placement hours online. Students who are already qualified therapists in fields such as Counselling, Psychotherapy or are applied Psychologists (HCPC registered) may be eligible to complete placement hours within their own private practice. Students wishing to undertake training hours in their private practice must be able to demonstrate their core professional training included 150 clinical placement hours and that their current private practice environment supports the safe and effective delivery of psychosexual therapy.

Students are supported in identifying appropriate placements and our programme has links with the psychosexual service at Nottingham University Hospital.

Clinical Supervision

Students are required to undertake clinical supervision of their training placement hours with a suitably qualified clinical supervisor at a ratio of 1:6, one hour of supervision for every six hours of clinical practice. Although case discussion is part of the live teaching, direct clinical supervision of trainees practice is not provided as part of the diploma, this needs to be factored in as an additional cost.

Clinical placement and supervision arrangement are agreed with the Course Director to ensure they meet the needs of the diploma and COSRT registration.
