Are you a qualified psychosexual and relationship therapist looking to elevate your practice and deepen your understanding of complex client presentations? The Institute of Psychosexual Psychotherapy is proud to offer its Psychotherapy Practitioner Diploma, a rigorous and rewarding program designed for experienced professionals.

This diploma can serve as part of our comprehensive qualifying pathway as a Psychosexual Psychotherapist or as a standalone advanced course for therapists seeking to enhance their clinical and research skills.

What Our Diploma Offers

Our part-time, one-year diploma program blends advanced clinical practice with an in-depth research project. Delivered conveniently online via six study days, delivered one per month 9am to 5pm, along with monthly academic supervision sessions. Next start date is October 2025.

 

Professional Recognition and Accreditation

This diploma is designed to align with the College of Sexual and Relationship Therapists (COSRT) Thematic Level 7 Training Course standards. This programme is going through the accreditation process pending approval.

This diploma is accepted as part of an application for UKCP membership as a Psychosexual Psychotherapist, provided you hold an eligible primary professional qualification and COSRT accreditation.

Curriculum Highlights

Our curriculum is thoughtfully designed to provide a robust learning experience, encompassing both theoretical knowledge and practical application.

  • Developing and writing a research proposal including research design methodology, and ethical considerations.

  • Understanding and critically evaluating psychotherapy research, undertake a comprehensive literature Review of Psychotherapy and Clinical Sexology Research.

  • Extensive reading, critical evaluation and synthesis of existing research through lectures, seminar and self-directed study.

  • Collect qualitative and / or quantitative data Collection using and / or developing appropriate research tool and methods.

  • Develop and deploy advanced data analysis skills to interpret finding and present new information to the field.

  • Develop academic critical writing skills drafting, refining, editing, and referencing a 10,000-word dissertation.

  • Demonstrate reflexivity through critical self-assessment of the research process and findings.

Advanced Clinical Practice

Deepen your clinical expertise with specialised modules:

  • Advancing anti-oppressive psychosexual and relationship therapy practice.

  • Working with complex presentations in psychosexual and relationship therapy.

  • Advanced approaches to gender, sexuality, and relationship diversities.

  • Understanding and treating ‘specialisms within the specialism’ such as complex presentations like treating compulsive sexual behaviour, shame and attachment issues.

  • Working effectively with psychological trauma in psychosexual and relationship therapy.

  • Advanced conflict resolution strategies for intimate partner therapy.

  • Engage in valuable group clinical case consultation to support your practical work.

Assessment Methods

Your learning will be assessed through a combination of written assignments and comprehensive clinical practice submissions:

  • Research Proposal

  • Ethical Research Approval Application

  • Case Study Research Dissertation: 10,000 words

  • Complex Case Analysis and Write Up

Completion Criteria

To successfully complete the Psychotherapy Practitioner Diploma, you will need to meet the following requirements:

  1. 90% attendance on teaching modules.

  2. Successfully complete all formal assessment components.

  3. Evidence you have completed 300 hours of psychosexual and relationship psychotherapy clinical practice (in addition to 150 qualifying hours), supervised at a 1:6 ratio to qualify for COSRT accreditation.

  4. Undertake 30 hours of personal therapy (in addition to 50 qualifying hours already undertaken as part of primary psychosexual training) to evidence 80 hours overall.

  5. Have, by the end of the diploma, undertaken three years post qualifying experience as a COSRT registered therapist or already be COSRT accredited.

 

Eligibility

Applicants for our Psychotherapy Practitioner Diploma must be qualified Psychosexual and Relationship Therapists. This ensures all participants have a foundational understanding and experience in the field.

 

Fees

The total fee for the Psychotherapy Practitioner Diploma is £1,750, conveniently payable via deposit of £130 and twelve monthly instalments of £135.
